Bentley Flying Spur – It’s an important model for Bentley: the new Flying Spur is the third and final member of the family of grand tourers that includes the Flying Spur, Continental GT and Cabrio, the latter two of which were announced in 2017 and 2018.

The whole car is just 5mm longer than its predecessor at 5304mm, but the wheelbase has been stretched 130mm to 3195mm, creating more rear legroom and stability at speed.

The new model is 38 kg lighter than the previous one, but to be clear, it’s still a heavy car at 2435 kg.

The new Flying Spur’s bold design is reminiscent of the Continental GT and GTC, meaning a lower and shorter front end with a grille above a fish-scale matrix.

Bentley chief designer Stefan Sielaff says the powertrain and body parts have been separated to make the rear of the new Flying Spur more aggressive and defined.

LED matrix headlights with a cut crystal effect and 21-inch wheels are standard, with 22-inch wheels available as an option.

Inside, you can get the new ‘cathedral window’ style seats – named for the leather pattern – in any of 15 hidden colours.

The center console features the Bentley Three-Sided Rotating Display. The first part has a 12.3-inch touchscreen, the second has three analog dials, and the third is a simple wood veneer panel for “digital detox.”

However, the distinctive interior element of the new Flying Spur is the three-dimensional diamond-stitched leather door inserts, which are produced by pressing the leather onto a diamond-patterned mold.

The standard sound system is a 10-speaker, 650-watt affair, but you’ll need to add Naim’s 2,200-watt 19-speaker setup with active bass carriers for the front seats.

The new Flying Spur is powered by the same twin-turbo 6-liter W12 in the Bentley Bentayga Speed, good for 626 hp and 900 Nm and mated to an 8-speed ZF dual-clutch automatic transmission.

New to the Flying Spur, and indeed to the entire Bentley range, is four-wheel steering, which steers the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the front at low speeds and in the same direction at high speeds.

This ensures agility at low speeds – such as when navigating parking lots, etc. – while improving stability at higher speeds.

The four-wheel drive system, compared to the older Flying Spur, now sends power forward only when it is needed.

Two years ago, the Crewe factory, full of solar panels, became the UK’s first carbon-neutral car factory. The goal is end-to-end carbon neutrality by 2030. It’s highly commendable, but so far the product doesn’t really support this.

Not so much. More sunken toe. Two years ago, Bentley launched the Bentayga Hybrid, and it was nothing short of impressive. Two years later, the Flying Spur packs it with a completely similar configuration. The hybrid system has increased by 8 horsepower and the battery is slightly larger, but in general the same weaknesses remain.

Broadly speaking, it’s the same system used by Porsche (in the Panamera and Cayenne) and Audi (in the A8 and Q7) and puts a single electric motor between the V6 and its automatic transmission. The 134 horsepower e-motor is powerful enough to drive the car by itself and at speeds of up to 84 mph. But if you’re at 84mph in electric mode, a) it’ll take a while to get there and b) you won’t travel any further on a 14.1kWh battery. Tickled at low speeds with a touch featherlight, you should be able to get 25-30 miles on electricity.

Exactly. But better to drive. I know we’ve said this about the Flying Spur hybrid, but it may well be unique because it’s a luxury sedan where the driver wouldn’t automatically be considered a hired assistant. It’s a very, very good design.

And inside, it’s as awesome as you’d expect. No difference here than the V8 or W12 versions. Hybrid systems do not compromise space. It’s an interesting place for four people when they get somewhere. The Damson leather on our car is a strong choice, but then again, the view through the windshield makes up for it because it’s all Icelandic.

Iceland, unsurprisingly for a country rich in natural energy resources, is firmly embracing electric cars. It is building a charging infrastructure that runs exclusively on renewable energy, while the gasoline we use in the Flying Spur is not gasoline at all, but second-generation biogasoline made from Coryton straw. The first generation fuel – made from vegetable oil, wheat grains, sugar cane – can also be used for human consumption or use the land used for production. But second generation fuels like straw are waste products – think wheat stalks or corn husks. The CO2 footprint of the final product is 40 percent smaller than that of gasoline.

It drives like the end product has the same EN228 rating as regular petrol. However, the scent is less sharp.

There’s no difference either. Bentley hasn’t released official WLTP economy and emissions figures yet, but when they do it’ll be ridiculous claiming this can achieve 100mpg on 50g/km or something. These tests are not fit for purpose – they allow you to compare cars, but they do not provide accurate real-world guidance. I got a total of 28mpg. Most owners should do better if they tune the car.

Um, not really. Flying Spur lacks advanced charging. It’s AC, not DC, and can only charge at a maximum of 7kW (what a home wall box produces), meaning over two hours to cover those 25 miles. So on long journeys, unless you’re taking a long break, it’s yours, and while it does regenerate energy when braking, it’s not much and there’s no room to allow excess engine power to be routed back to the battery. There’s a Hold mode that holds a certain level (useful if your trip ends in a city so you can drive the last few miles in EV), but it’s up to you.

Meanwhile, the V6 will take you 15 times further before needing to fill up. And perhaps a little strangely, it’s the hardware that’s received a significant upgrade from the Bentayga, which now develops an extra 95bhp. That’s because the Bentayga’s single-turbo 3.0 V6 is now a 2.9-liter “hot vee” twin-turbo. This alone makes 410 horsepower and 406 lb ft.

Absolutely not. Total system output is 536bhp and 553lb ft (the twin-turbo V8 produces 542bhp and 568lb ft), giving the Flying Spur a potential 177mph and 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds.

But speed alone is not the most important thing for this car, and it is not very satisfying. That’s because the V6 is pretty rough. If you’re just naturally creeping, you won’t notice, it comes to life calmly and quietly when you switch to Sport mode, and is quiet when driving. But if you can tolerate the acceleration, it becomes a bit of a struggle. And Bentley shouldn’t be picky. It should be low and rumbling, like the current coming from an underground source.

It drives very well. The ride is great – Bentley always seems to be able to use weight to its advantage – it steers quietly and smoothly and has a more engaging and connected chassis than you’d expect. Body control is great.

Powertrain integration is great – no hesitation, it’s responsive and petrol and electric work well. But gasoline is the dominant partner. Electricity feels like a bolt. And yes, that’s the case with almost all hybrids now, and it’s a technology-induced limitation. Batteries are large and heavy, so packing them into an already heavy and complex combustion platform is difficult.
