Volkswagen Atlas 2025 – Most of the Volkswagen SUV concepts sold today, including the current Volkswagen Atlas seven-seat crossover, were sport plug-ins, although no such variant was produced.
On Tuesday evening, ahead of the start of media days at the New York Auto Show, VW revealed a “near-production” concept of a shorter, five-seat version of the current Atlas that will go on sale in 2020. Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

According to predictions, it will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid engine, albeit a new one that has not been shown by Volkswagen before.

It adds a 40-kilowatt (54-horsepower) electric motor to the 276-hp 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 currently used in the Atlas, which drives the front wheels via a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.
A second and more powerful electric motor with 85 kW (114 hp) and 199 lb-ft was added between the rear wheels to provide the required all-wheel drive system.
Eliminating the drive shaft powering the rear wheels allows Volkswagen to place the 18 kWh lithium-ion battery pack in the center tunnel. The company offers an all-electric range of 26 miles from a single plug.
The net output from all three sources is 355 horsepower, allowing the VW Atlas Cross Sport to accelerate from 0 to 100 mph in just 5.4 seconds. Top speed is 130 miles per hour.

The charging port door is located near the rear wheel arch, but Volkswagen says it’s just exploring the possibilities of a plug-in hybrid Atlas. Unlike Audi, the Volkswagen brand has never sold a plug-in hybrid model in the United States.
Perhaps as an electrification option, there could be a mild hybrid version of the Atlas Cross Sport, which Volkswagen says produces 2kWh for 310bhp and a 0-100mph time of 6.5 seconds.
Slotted in front of the seven-seat Atlas, the Cross Sport is 7.5 inches shorter, though the wheelbase remains the same and it will be built on the same assembly line as its taller sibling.
It has two slender bars instead of the bigger Atlas’s three (bars to match the rows of seats?), but its sharply raked rear end gets a large spoiler to best differentiate the cars rear three-quarter view.

It was previewed more than three years ago at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show with the Volkswagen Cross Coupe concept.
In addition to the usual driver-selectable traction modes from Eco to Comfort, Sport and Snow, the Atlas Cross Sport allows drivers to choose between E-Mode, Hybrid, GTE, Off-Road and Battery Save/Battery Charge modes:
The default hybrid mode uses the battery at a low rate and mixes power from both sources, using regenerative braking to capture energy that would otherwise be lost.
E-Mode allows the car to operate only on battery power within its range. Battery saver mode allows drivers to save battery power for later use, whether in quiet neighborhoods or in zero-emission zones in central cities.

Off-road mode Cross Sport uses the engine to drive the front engine, which acts as a generator to power the rear engine for more traction than the battery pack alone can provide.
While Volkswagen has reiterated plans to introduce a production version of the ID Crozz all-electric compact crossover in 2020, it’s unclear when or if the plug-in Atlas model will go on sale.

Debuting at the New York Auto Show, the Atlas Cross Sport concept takes a closer look at the five-passenger, two-row member of the Atlas family. The original is expected to go into production next year in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside the existing Atlas and Passat.
And don’t take my word for it. At the launch of the Cross Sport in New York tonight, Hinrich Webken, regional managing director of Volkswagen North America, said it offers a “very strong idea” of what the real thing might be like.
Volkswagen has made no secret of its intention to add more crossovers to its lineup to attract SUV-crazy consumers. Last month, in fact, VW said the Tiguan and Atlas accounted for 54 percent of U.S. sales.

The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has the same wheelbase as the standard Atlas and shares its MQB modular platform, but is 7.5 inches shorter in length, giving the crossover very short overhangs that give it a sporty look. The concept is also nearly two inches lower than today’s Atlas and more than an inch narrower. With just two rows and seating for five, it bridges the gap between the current Atlas (three rows) and the Tiguan (two or three rows, depending on trim).
Up front, the Cross Sport concept looks very similar to the Atlas, with a wide two-bar grille that uses its illuminated grille spears as running lights, a striped hood and tough-looking plastic trim around the fenders. That’s where the concept really stands out from its production big brother, with thick, angled C-pillars that provide an almost 45-degree angle for the rear window. With rear fascia-mounted exhausts, a full-width chrome spear over the liftgate, a roof spoiler and a prominently flared rear suspension, the Cross Sport hints at plenty of performance from the rear.
In this case, performance means a 5.4-second sprint to 60 mph and 26 miles of all-electric driving. That’s thanks to a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 276-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 (from the regular Atlas) working in tandem with two electric motors. The front engine produces 54 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, while the rear engine offers 114 horsepower and 199 lb-ft. The lithium-ion battery stores 18.0 kWh of energy for the hybrid system. The total power of the system reaches 355 horsepower.
Interestingly, Volkswagen says the Cross Sport “may also feature a mild hybrid powertrain,” which could be a closer hint at the powertrain we’ll see at launch. In this case, VW says the tiny battery pack of just 2.0 kWh will allow a total of 310 horsepower, a sprint to 60 in 6.5 seconds. In any case, there will be five driving modes. E-Mode uses only the rear engine. and battery pack, Hybrid automatically selects which energy source is most suitable, GTE is designed for sports driving, Off-Road activates all-wheel drive using two electric motors, and as the name suggests, the Battery Holding/Charging design is rejuvenated lithium-ion pack.

There’s more technology inside the cabin, where the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport concept has a larger screen (12.3 inches) than the touchscreen infotainment system (10.1 inches). The former can display all kinds of driving, entertainment and navigation information. The infotainment system, like other Volkswagen models, will have proximity sensors and gesture control with 2D or 3D map navigation among its many functions.
We’ll have to wait a while to see how close the production model’s design is to this concept, and if any of the aforementioned hybrid powertrains make it to showrooms. But with the introduction of this Cross Sport concept, it’s clearer than ever that Volkswagen is making big strides in the crossover segment.

The new Atlas Cross Sport concept is a five-seater version of the mid-size SUV that went on sale in the United States in 2017 as a seven-seater. The near-production concept car features a coupe-like profile, sportier styling and a 355-horsepower plug-in hybrid engine with an expected 26 miles of all-electric range. The usual mild hybrid version of the same power unit will produce 310 horsepower. The actual production car will hit the US market starting in 2019 and will be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside the seven-passenger Atlas and Passat sedans.

The concept car is 190.8 inches long, 68.3 inches tall and 79.9 inches wide. The rugged exterior is marked by a two-bar grille at the front instead of the triple grille of the seven-passenger Atlas.
